Periyar National Park


Periyar National Park is located in the ranges of Western Ghats it is also a Tiger reserve apart from it being a National park. Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India. Periyar terrain ranges from hilly to flat grassland areas at the edges of the manmade lake which is a major tourist attraction.

The Periyar National park has lot of means of entertainment and recreations such as swimming at the lake and angling are easily available. Boat rides are possible at the lake, trekking is another option passing all the way through jungle to the Temple. Periyar National Park comprises of rich flora and fauna, with elephants found here commonly, gaur, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, dholes, mongoose, foxes, leopards and sometime rarely get to see Nilgiri Tahr. Survey says they have 320 bird species in Periyar such as darters, cormorants, kingfishers, Malabar hornbill and racket tailed drongos.

The best season to visit Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is is form October to June. After heavy rains the chances of wildlife or bird watching becomes rare as the animals gather at the lake only when there is no water source available inside the National Park. There are some more attractions like Periyar Lake, Kumily and Cardamom Hills.
