Nagarhole National Park

Weekend getaway was planned long ago due to long weekend, and accordingly we had booked the place to stay near Nagarhole through Travelife. It was on Thursday evening we were on our way towards Nagarhole, excited though tired with the hectic schedule at work. The thought of being there just pumped us all with enormous energy.Had a pleasant journey all long way and reached the place had food and all of us crashed out around midnight.

Next day early before sunrise we started our way towards Nagarhole National park with high spirits on sighting a Leopard. Nagarhole is the name originated from Naga (snakes) and Hole (streams) is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Adjoining to it is Bandipur Natioanl Park which is again as rich in wildlife as Nagarhole. The sanctuary is believed to have a higher density of elephants, bison and tiger, compared to Bandipur.

Reaching Nagarhole we cleared check post and a ton of happiness and excitement flooded thinking about the Safari. To be seated in jeep safari in itself was an enthralling experience, we sighted herds of elephants, bison, spotted deer, barking deer, sambhar, wild boars and dozens of species of birds like white breasted kingfisher, brahminy kite, painted stork, black ibis and many other.

Sighting of wild dogs made the trip all the more interesting as they are spotted very rarely. Their specialty is they all move around in groups and often eat their prey when alive. Our entire safari we were anticipated on sighting a tiger, completely engrossed on the thought of sighting it from some corner. As big cats are more elusive then anything else and not to experience it would be very disappointing for all of us.

Apart from this we also noticed people inside the national park never honked, never talk loudly, very importantly never used plastics, no playing music etc, all this to make sure the rich flora fauna and the natural habitat be undisturbed. With this came an end to our 2 hours of safari with blink of an eye. Left Nagarhole with heartfelt enjoyment and one best of the best times we have ever spent, Nagarhole is a must visit for a deep nature lover. ‘Snake Stream’ of Karnataka - Nagarhole National Park

Nagarhole National Park derives its name from the combination of two kannada words. 'Nagar' means snake, and 'hole', meaning streams. True its name, quite a few serpentine streams fork through the ricg tropical forests of the park. The park has been recently named as Rajiv Gandhi National Park after late Prime minister of India.

Nagarhole is counted among India’s best wildlife parks. It has a large elephant and bison population. It also hosts a variety of animal species along with approximately 250 species of birds. The park is home to elephant, tiger, panther, sambar, chital, sloth bear, leopard, jungle cat, jackal, wild dog and some of the birds that you may come across are Malabar trogon, crested hawk-eagle, crested serpent-eagle and Malabar pied-hornbill.

On its northern confines is the Kabini River and on its southern fringes is the Bandipur national park. A dam on the Kabini River and its picturesque reservoir demarcates the two national parks. During the dry season (February. June), this artificial lake attracts a large number of animals, making it an ideal spot for sighting wildlife.
