Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary



Periyar National Park is located in God’s own country called Kerala, basically in the western ghats at high ranges. It is a tiger reserve and is a nature’s bounty with great scenic charm, rich bio diversity and is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India.

The sanctuary surrounds picturesque periyar lake, this lake is formed due to the dam which provides a permanent source of water for local wildlife. The major wildlife attractions in Periyar National Park are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a Tiger. Periyar also houses an elusive Nilgiri tahr which is rarely found, the lion tailed macaque, nilgiri langur, common langur and bonnet macaque. Lot of birds are also found here at Periyar, one can also encounter a python and sometimes even a King Cobra. Other attractions in periyar are Kumily, cardamom hills and Boat cruises. For wildlife sightings the chances of sightings after rains is little low as heavy rains.

Periyar in situated in the lap of the mountains, is like a canvas of many shades. The fresh air of the wet deciduous forest gives one a possibility to rate the peace and tranquility and extended to return for more. The best duration to visit periyar wildlife sanctuaries is from month of October and June. It is approximatey 500kms from Bangalore, by air you can connect to Kochi 200kms from periyar. By rail 114kms from Kottayam, by road buses are made available easily.
