Kokkare Bellur of Pelicans and Painted storks…

Kokkare Bellur is village in Karnataka famous for its rare birds. Kokkare Bellur is one of the few nesting sites in India of the spotbilled pelican. In addition, it is also home to hundreds of painted storks. The best time to see the pelicans is in December and January.

Located off the Mysore highway, about 75 km from Bangalore. The spot billed pelican (Pelicans philippensis) is a globally threatened species that has suffered a rapid decline in population during that past seventy years. Of the ten known nesting sites in India the pelicanry at Kolamuru village in AP and one at Kaziranga in Assam have now been virtually abandoned.

For photographers interested in birds Kokkare Bellur is the best place one can sight the maximum.
